St. Hubert, Apostle of the Ardennes, Patron Saint of Mathematicians

Saint Hubert became bishop of Liège in 708 AD. Born in 656 AD to a Frankish duke. Later marrying Floribanne, daughter of Dagobert, Count of Leuven (or Louvain in French). Floribanne died giving birth to their son Floribert, an event which devastated Hubert. He retreated to hunting the forests of the Ardennes. It was there that he saw the miracle which lead to his conversion to the Catholic faith.

On the morning of Good Friday, Hubert was out hunting a magnificent stag, but when it turned to face him, he saw a glowing cross between it's antlers and said:
Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord and leadest a holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into Hell.
Hubert asks God what he should do, but the stag says:
"Go and seek Lambert, and he will instruct you."
(Lambert was the bishop of Maastricht-Liège at the time).
Hubert's conversion

Hubert then left to go meet Lambert, he gave up all his honors, and distributed his wealth and possessions to the poor. He studied to become a priest under Lambert. In 708 AD, Lambert sent Hubert on a pilgrimage to Rome, but while Hubert was gone, Lambert was assassinated by followers of Pepin.

St. Hubert is honored as the originator of ethical hunting practices, and is also patron saint of dogs, hunters, mathematicians, metal workers, and the city of Liège.

I chose St. Hubert as my confirmation saint, when I was baptized and confirmed this easter vigil. It was a beautiful ceremony and I'm grateful to the St. Rita community for their support and guidance. Preparation for that event is one of the reasons I haven't been blogging in a while. In honor of Hubert's status as the patron saint of mathematicians, I am going to integrate my prayer practices with my mathematical practices.
